History of the Church

The Holy Ascension Cathedral in Alexandrovsk was built in 1849 on the site of a wooden church dating from 1791. The building combines classical architecture with elements of the pseudo-Russian and Gothic styles, and its interior retains original stucco moldings and fragments of nineteenth-century murals. The city has faced shelling since 2014. Shell fragments fell in the cathedral courtyard, and one unexploded shell was defused by sappers. Thanks to the efforts of the rector, Archpriest Yakov Lobov, and his family, the cathedral became a humanitarian center: bread was delivered from Lugansk, Russian humanitarian aid was distributed, and a free field kitchen was organized for local residents.
